The Japan Rail Pass is specifically
designed for tourists and must be
bought outside Japan. It allows
unlimited travel on Japan Rail lines
and affiliated buses and ferries.
Passes are available in two classes,
Green (First Class) or Ordinary
(Economy Class) and for periods of 7,
14 or 21 days of consecutive travel,
starting from your first day of
travel. The Pass is excellent value
for money with the 7 Day Ordinary Pass
costing the same as one return ticket
between Tokyo and Kyoto. The Japan
Rail Pass also offers holders a 10%
discount on reservations made locally
for hotels within the Japan Rail Hotel
Group (your Pass must be shown at

This pass covers metropolitan Tokyo
and many popular destinations in
Eastern Japan including: Nagano,
Niigata, Sendai, Morioka, Misawa and
Akita. The pass is available in both
classes, Green or Ordinary, for 5 or
10 days of consecutive travel,
starting from your first day of
travel. Alternatively a flexible 4 day
pass is available, being valid for any
4 non-consecutive days within a one
month period from the date the pass is

Japan Rail West (Kansai Area) Pass
Covering a smaller, more specific area
of western Japan, this excursion pass
allows the visitor to explore the many
sightseeing locations of the area
including: Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara
and Himeji. This pass is available for
1 or 4 days of consecutive travel
starting from the first travel date,
and allows unlimited use of the
Ordinary class cars, including the
rapid-service and special
rapid-service trains. This pass cannot
be used for the Shinkansen trains.

Japan Rail West (Sanyo Area) Pass
This excursion pass covers an area of
western Japan stretching roughly from
Sasebo to Osaka, including famous
sightseeing areas such as: Hiroshima,
Okayama and Hakata. The pass is only
available in Ordinary Class traveling on the 500-Series ÔNozomi' and other
Sanyo Shinkansen trains (reserved and
non-reserved seats). This area pass is
available for 4 or 8 consecutive days
of travel starting from the first date
